Born to Smt. Raj Kumari Roy and late Moti Lal Roy (Advocate, Patna High Court) and grandson of late Chameli Devi and late B.B. Yadav (renowned Timber Merchant of Patna), Justice Rajiv Roy completed his schooling from Ram Mohun Roy Seminary, Patna.
Justice Roy graduated in B.Sc. (Zoology Hons.) from Science College, Patna securing position in the Patna University. Later he did his post graduation (M.Sc., Zoology) from Department of Zoology, Patna University and joined Patna Law College from where he got his LL.B. degree in 1989.
Justice Roy joined the Patna High Court Bar under Senior Advocate, Late Parmeshwar Prasad Sinha in 1990. After the death of Mr. Sinha the same year, Justice Roy joined the office of Shri K.K. Mandal (later elevated as Judge, Patna High Court).
Justice Roy was Retained Counsel for Bihar Renewal Energy Development Agency (2005-2007) and Bihar State Text Book Publishing Corporation (2007-2009)]. He was also Panel Lawyer for the New India Assurance Company (2004-2006), Bihar State Agriculture Marketing Board [abolished (2006-2009)], Bihar State Electricity Board (2009-2010) and Patna Municipal Corporation (2011). He mainly practiced in constitutional, service and criminal matters.
Justice Rajiv Roy was elected as Secretary of Patna High Court Bar Association for the term 2009-2011.
In 2010, the State Government appointed Justice Roy as Government Pleader-5 under the then Advocate General, late Ram Balak Mahto, Senior Advocate. He continued on the said post which was re-designated as Government Pleader -1 in 2016. He resigned from the post in 2021.
Justice Rajiv Roy took oath as Judge of Patna High Court on 29th March, 2022. He is married to Mrs. Madhu Roy and the couple is blessed with a daughter, Dipti Roy, B.Tech.
